Leslie D. Netting (U.S.A.)

Lyrical Jazz Dance

Netting, D. Leslie (U.S.A.): "Lyrical Jazz Dance", 18th International Congress on Dance Research, Argos, 3-7/11, 2004.

This thirty minute class will offer any dancer or dance educator exposure to lyrical jazz dance with special emphasis on center barre, that portion of the lyrical jazz class that differentiates it from a conventional jazz class. The integration and employment of the balletic line, or center barre, offsets the strong percussive features of conventional jazz dance and extends the body line encouraging muscle strength, joint flexibility and balance, as well as providing an outlet for emotional communication. Participants will experience the proper progression for a lyrical jazz class, variations for different abilities, and appropriate musical accompaniment.
